Looking back on 2023 I am reminded how fortunate I am. As we enter 2024, I think back to 10 years ago in 2014 when I was right out of high school, joined Black Flag, met my wife to be, and moved to Southern California all in the same year. Since then, I’ve never taken a moment for granted and I’ve lived some incredible experiences playing in bands such as Doyle, Ho99o9, Manson, Corey Taylor, Limp Bizkit, and Suicidal Tendencies. Knowing I’ve now found my home with The Offspring as I enter the 10th year of my career is a great feeling. Speaking of 10 years, I can’t wait for the next 10 years with The Offspring. For the past (almost) two years, I’ve been so unbelievably fortunate to play with the almighty Suicidal Tendencies. Musically and personally, it’s been some of the best times of my life. Every single person in the band/crew will be lifelong friends of mine and they have all filled my heart with joy these past couple years. I’ve learned so much during my time with ST -- as a person, and as a musician. As a person, I can’t say enough good things about everyone in this camp — it’s a true family. As a musician, the amount of growth I’ve experienced is priceless. I mean, come on - you can’t be in a band with Mike Muir and not end up being pushed as a musician and come out better than you were before. The thing about life is, there comes a time when you have to make decisions — hard decisions — and they’re never based on one factor alone; they’re based on many factors: where you are in life, where you’ve been, where you want to go, what’s best for you at the time, what you think the future will look like, and so many other personal factors. And with this, I’ve made the difficult decision to leave Suicidal Tendencies. Rest assured, the band will still be firing on all cylinders. My boy, @greyson_nekrutman is an absolute monster and is going to KILL it with ST. They all have my full love and support. As for me, I’ll have more news soon! I ain’t stepping away from drumming anytime soon. In the meantime, I can’t thank everyone involved enough in Suicidal Tendencies for everything. Man, what an honor it’s been. I’ll always look back on this time and smile.

HAMMERHEAD - THE OFFSPRING I’ve wanted to do a cover of this song for years. When I first heard this song as a teenager, the arrangement completely captivated me — with the fast punk beats in the first half of the song, and then the second half of the song completely changing direction and exploding with some huge rock drums. BLACK FLAG - DAMAGED II (2014) Man. Watching this footage is so cool. @robxwallace recently sent me videos from this tour I had never seen before. I was 19 in 2014, and Black Flag was my first touring gig… Man we straight up KILLED. I think Greg did some of his best playing here. I mean, look how aggressive his playing is. We were tight, fast, and played with fury. It’s also cool watching this, because I can see I hadn’t fully developed into my own style yet - but I was getting there.

Suicidal doesn’t play with a click, so I’m always extremely mindful of making sure each song’s tempo is sitting in a really good spot- allowing the vocals and guitars to sit where they’re supposed to. And this is something I’ve been working on for years and I’m still improving… Today I was watching some footage from the shows recently and decided to pull out my metronome to see how much my tempo drifts. This is either extreme luck, or the years of being mindful about my tempos is paying off😂

Finally, after a year of renovation — our Airbnb project is done! For months on end, it seemed like we would never be done. It was some of the hardest work I’ve done in my life. 12 hour days for months and months on end, figuring out how to renovate a house with little experience. My dad quickly became a jack of all trades, I figured out how to tile, my mom helped assist us/did the administrative work, and @emilypertzborn designed the whole place! The story on the house… My grandparents built this house in 1948. Once they passed away, we knew we had to preserve this house. We had no choice. I’m sure it would’ve been bulldozed and replaced with multiple cheap new homes that all look the same. Problem was, Emily and I live in Los Angeles, and my parents live in Texas — but we knew we had to find a way to preserve the history. This was certainly one of the most soul satisfying things I’ve ever done. I’m so proud we were able to have a part in the continuation of my family’s history. I just wish my grandparents could see it! Based on the historic photos of the house, it had a VIBE all throughout the late 40’s-80’s, and only later did it become a bit more bland. But we weren’t going for bland — we wanted to reach into the historical element and get colorful and different. Most everything is bland and safe now — not this!! If I wasn’t able to give you a call so many times for advice, I don’t know what we would’ve done. @kimpoppenphoto , your photos are killer. Thank you so much for your time and skills. And uncle Bob, uncle Rick, uncle Mike, uncle Tim, and Aunt Sue — thank you so much for your contributions!! From the beginning, the primary reason for us stepping into this project was about FAMILY. Your help and support was so appreciated. Whether it was loaning us tools, providing advice, etc — Having family participate was the coolest part of the project for me. Now the question is — what do I with all my free time now?
